Glass House Democrats

People who live in Glass Houses...

There is an American proverb that goes like this: “People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones”. It is another way of saying “liars shouldn’t make accusations”.

Recently, President Barack Obama trotted out the spurious campaign theme of “foreign subversion of American democracy” against… wait for it… the Chamber of Commerce. Obama then sent attack dogs David AxlerodRobert Gibbs and Vice President Joe Biden to drum the message into the minds of the uninformed.

Yet, neither the Democrat National Committee (DNC) nor the White House have provided any evidence that the Chamber of Commerce has used foreign-generated funds for campaign ads.

And, rather inconveniently for the Democrats, the left-leaning New York Times  found no basis for the charge… and further, pointed out that many leftist environmental and union groups raise political money from foreign sources.

It is a case of what psychologists term “projection”. It is a form of accusing others of your own sins in order to justify your negative behavior. The rest of us just call it hypocrisy.

So, why are the Democrats accusing the Republicans of subverting American democracy when they take DOUBLE the foreign funds of their opponents?

Two reasons: (1) to distract independent voters away from the dismal record of Obamanomics, and because (2) nothing arouses the Loony Left’s ire like people spending their own money on conservative political causes.

These are desperate times for Democrat congressional candidates. They need every vote they can muster — even if they have to lie to get them.

Landrieu Makes Obama Cry ‘Uncle’ on Drilling Moratorium

She is One Scary Senator

Politico reports that the Obama Administration ended the offshore drilling ban “a month early”.

Although this is good news for Gulf State economies, don’t be fooled into thinking their suffering prompted President Obama to proper action.

No, good old-fashioned backroom politics got it done. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) placed a “hold” on the nomination of Jack Lew as director of the White House Office of Management and Budget. The action effectively held the nomination hostage until Landrieu relented.

In other words, she threw a senatorial hissy. And, more importantly, Obama caved.

Is it any wonder Ahmadinejad and Kim aren’t persuaded by Obama’s tough talk? If you can’t move Mary Landrieu off a dime, well… where are you really?

But, back to the drilling ban. As Ed Morrissey writes at Hot Air:

A month early? Try at least two months too late. A study conducted by Barack Obama’s own hand-picked commission showed that not only was the blanket moratorium no longer needed, it was never necessary in the first place.  (emphasis added)

This presidential decision had nothing to do protecting the environment. While the drilling moratorium was in place, the Obama Administration approved a $1 billion loan to Mexico for expanded operations in the Gulf.

If the administration was so concerned with potential ecological damage, why was it permissible for Mexico to expand drilling operations in the same body of water? Does Mexican crude oil not stick to water fowl, kill fish or pollute beaches? Of course, it does.

The offshore drilling ban was pure leftist politics on a number of levels. First, the ban was an obvious sop to environmentalist groups who questioned Obama’s commitment to the cause. Second, the moratorium was a “dead fish” message sent to the oil companies. And third, the action was based on the wealth redistribution dogma central to Obama’s political ideology.

All of that was certainly much more important to Obama than the jobs of 10,000 Americans. Aren’t those the same American workers Democrats always claim to protect? Oh well, the ends justify the means, right?

What delicious irony that the whole plan was brought down by bare-knuckled politics as practiced by a liberal Democrat who benefits from oil industry campaign donations.

That President Obama sure has them all shaking in their boots.

Rahm Runs, Chicago Yawns

"Hold Me Closer, Tiny Dancer" or "Don't Stand So Close to Me"?

Former chief-of-staff (and 5′-4″ ballerina wannabe) Rahm Emanuel enjoyed a hugs-and-tears sendoff from the Obama White House.  He then immediately launched his Windy City mayoral campaign.  Well actually, Emanuel recorded a campaign video before leaving the capital.

Despite the ensuing media frenzy, Emanuel is not a big hit with his potential constituents

Maybe, these Chicagoans know about Rahm’s “dead fish” message and “liberals are f**king retarded” comment.  Or, maybe they’re just as upset with Obamanomics as the rest of the nation.

There are also concerns that “Rahmbo” is not a legal resident of the “City That Works”. I have no doubt that such pesky technicalities will be easily swept aside.

An intriguing question is: Will President Barack Obama appear in ads or actively campaign for Rahm?  Given Obama’s reduced standing in his home state, maybe Emmanuel will avoid asking for the president’s help.

African-Americans and Hispanics in Chicago see the end of the Daley Era as the perfect time for their ascension at City Hall.  Several such candidates have already began campaigns.  Chances are they won’t take kindly to Rahm’s carpetbagging.  Politics in Chicago is very local and very personal.   Absent unusual circumstances, Obama’s positive sendoff was likely the extent of his involvement in the mayoral race.  He’ll avoid the entanglement of hometown politics as much as possible.

What are Emanuel’s chances of election?  With a gazillion candidates on the ballot, all Emmanuel needs is to keep any one of his opponents from gaining an outright majority (say through a slew of attack ads), finish second and force a runoff.  He may have a chance then.

An as yet unannounced candidate, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, may be Rahmbo’s biggest obstacle to election.  Dart has support among Chicago “lakefront liberals” and the African-American community.  A Dart-Emanuel race would be fun to watch.

Democrats at War… with Each Other

Gunning for Each Other

No doubt about it, Americans are angry.  And, the anger is not exclusive to political right.

The liberal media reports breathlessly and incessantly on the battle among Republicans between “Tea Party Patriots” and the “GOP Establishment”.

What the media has avoided analyzing… naturally… is the growing and evident divide in the Democrat Party.

Here are a several examples:

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs reacted strongly against criticism from those he termed “the professional left”.  Gibbs told The Hill website, “Those people ought to be drug tested.”

(Despite the truth of Gibbs’ statement, is it wise to call your political base stoners?)

Obama chief-of-staff Rahm Emmanuel, not to be outdone by a mere PR hack, called MoveOn.org and other lefty groups “f—ing retarded” for running ads against administration-supported Democrats.

(Temper, temper Rahm.)

New York Times uber-liberal columnist Maureen Dowd slammed President Obama as “an elitist and situationist.”

(Poor Maureen has only become more unhinged since Bush and Cheney left Washington.  And, who thought that was possible?)

Labor unions and environmentalists strongly backed Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter (D-AR) for nomination against Obama-supported incumbent Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR).  Lincoln barely survived the primary challenge.

(In other words: No Card Check – No Love.)

The White House tried to buy off Representative Joe Sestak (D-PA) to avoid a primary challenge to party-switching octogenarian Senator Arlen Specter (D/R/D-PA).  Sestak rejected the bribe and easily bested Specter.

(Moral: Never borrow another kid’s pudding spoon.)

So-called conservative Blue Dog Democrats loudly lobbied for a pre-election vote on extending the Bush Tax Cuts to help their slim re-election chances.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid used their powerful positions to prevent such heresy to liberal ideology.

(See what that “Yes” vote on ObamaCare got ya?

The Congressional Black Caucus is feeling unloved by a mostly-white Democrat leadership that keeps investigating them for ethics violations.

(Now how are Democrats supposed to play the Race Card?)

And, just this week Obama political adviser David Axlerod had a testy conference call with lefty bloggers.  Crooks and Liars blogger Susan Madrak accused the Obama Administration of “hippie punching”.  Added Madrak of lib bloggers in general:

We’re the girl you’ll take under the bleachers but you won’t be seen with in the light of day.

(There are at least one hundred jokes there… and as tempting as it is… I will let them go.)

Imagine Obama and the Democrats losing the Daily Kos and Firedoglake crowd.  Can a Nader/Kucinich 2012 third-party ticket be just around the corner?

Sometimes the stories they don’t focus on are the really important ones.

Jimmy Carter: Our Superior Ex-President

Every Crackpot Needs a Friend

Ex-President Jimmy Carter (D-GA) wants America to know that he is still around. And, in case you forgot, he’s our most important living former president.  At least he waited for Ronald Reagan (R-CA) to pass on before elevating himself.

Carter told Brian Williams of NBC News

I feel that my role as a former president is probably superior to that of other presidents.

Jimmy Carter is such a Democrat icon that no one in his party ever asks him to campaign for them.  Of course, Barack Obama knows how Jimmy feels.  Obama is just hopeful that he won’t spend thirty years in the wilderness as Carter has.

Jimmy Carter is the poster boy for presidential incompetence.  Even the liberal media gave him a hard time while in office. Remember “malaise”?  The Cardigan Sweater Strategy to combat the energy crisis? The White House tennis court schedule?  The 1980 Summer Olympics Boycott?  High unemployment and high inflation? The Misery Index?  Human Rights Foreign Policy?  The Iranian Hostage Crisis?  The failed hostage rescue?

Geez, even Reagan would have a drink with Speaker Thomas “Tip” O’Neil (D-MA) every once in a while. But, not Carter. He was, well… superior.  Many fellow Democrats hated him. Ted Kennedy and Jerry Brown ran against him for the presidential nomination. Ironically, many commented on his superior attitude.

He started as the Great Hope to reform politics after the Watergate scandal.  The media gushed that the Georgia peanut farmer was the outsider who would change politics.  And honestly, Carter did change American politics.

It is indisputable that Jimmy Carter’s one-term presidency made Ronald Reagan’s 1980 landslide election a sure thing.  And, Carter never saw it coming.  Or, felt the drubbing was deserved.  President Obama should take notice.

Carter has primarily spent his post-White House years supporting Habitat for Humanity… Hamas, Yasser Arafat, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Global Warming, the United Nations, and on and on and on. If he had just stuck with Habitat for Humanity. In Carter’s mind, this makes up for his dismal term in office.

I am not surprised that Carter believes he is the “superior” living ex-president.  But, someone should tell him that he is the only one who thinks so. Seriously, even Rosalynn Carter probably has her doubts.

Colin Powell: Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places

General Confusion

Retired General and former Secretary of State Colin Powell has regained his rightful title: “The Liberal Media’s Favorite Republican”.

Powell takes over from Senator John McCain (R-Az).  Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) must be throwing a hissy fit over being leapfrogged.

Powell appeared on NBC‘s “Meet the Press”.  As if they didn’t know each other.

The surest way to feel the warm glow of media love is to speak ill of Republicans — especially if you self-identify as a Republican.

You may recall that Powell endorsed then Senator Barack Obama over John McCain in the 2008 presidential election.  Because, you know, McCain is such a tin-foil hat wearing right-winger.

I’m not sure on what issues Powell bases his alleged Republican identification.  It can’t be illegal immigration. Quoth Powell:

They’re all over at my house doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I’m sure you’ve seen them at, at your house.

Powell is one of those kind-hearted Republicans who has Obama’s back. He offered that President Obama has accomplished a great deal.

He’s done a lot with health care, with cap and trade, with education, and I understand the importance of all of that; but as far as the American people are concerned, the main attack is employment, and he’s got to fix that.

So, from this we know that Powell is one of that huge number of Republicans who favors ObamaCare and Cap and Trade.

His Republicanism also isn’t based on his stands on abortion, gun rights, the death penalty, gay marriage, lower taxes or… well you get the idea.  Powell  would seem to be pro-military, but, so is just about every Democrat candidate you ask. So that can’t be it either.

Yet, Powell calls himself a Republican and is happy to tell any reporter he meets what is wrong with his party.  Which is exactly why he get’s interviewed.

Who does the General hold up as an example of a principled Republican?

If the Republican Party’s going to come out in the way that Mike Bloomberg is talking about and others are talking about, they’ve got to take a hard look at some of the positions they’ve been taking.

Yes that’s right.  Powell is championing the Republicanism of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Now this all makes sense.

An Inconvenient Extremist

Absurdum in extremis

[This post was published at the American Thinker blog on September 2, 2010.]

Can the “violent extremists are only found on the right” stereotype finally be put to rest?

James Jay Lee, an environmental activist and self-described “world guardian”, was shot and killed in a hostage standoff. Mr. Lee entered the headquarters of The Discovery Channel in Silver Spring, Maryland with a handgun and canisters resembling explosives strapped to his body. Thankfully, Lee’s three hostages were not harmed.

James Jay Lee was a tortured soul. What tortured him was the belief that the Earth was doomed by the proliferation of “human parasites” and the environmental damage caused by “civilization’s filth”.

We can feel sorry for a man who lost his way, and perhaps his sanity as well. We should be thankful that his violent act hurt no one besides himself.

Liberals love to conduct post-mortem psychoanalyses in these situations, if they think a conservative ideology is involved. So, in fairness, we should seek an answer to what caused James Jay Lee to so hate his fellow humans.

We don’t have to dig very deep to learn the truth. Mr. Lee was quite candid about his inspiration.

Lee had been a periodic protestor outside of the Discovery Channel headquarters. His aggressive protests and bizarre actions led to an arrest in 2008. At his trial, Mr. Lee explained that his activism was spurred by the environmentalist doomsday novels of Daniel Quinn and by former Vice President Al Gore‘s film “An Inconvenient Truth“.

Lee detailed his beliefs in a manifesto on his website and distributed it to Discovery Channel executives. He demanded that the cable outlet use his manifesto as a source for future programming. Lee also castigated the executives for not producing videos based on Quinn’s and Gore’s warnings.

Among Lee’s writings:

Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down! This is your obligation. If you think it isn’t, then get hell (sic) off the planet! Breathe Oil! It is the moral obligation of everyone living otherwise what good are they??

All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs’ places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it.

It would be easy to simply write off Mr. Lee as mentally ill, but according to his family this behavior started within the last few years. Perhaps he was unstable. But, is it also likely that the environmental extremism Lee professed was learned?

My children received a steady diet of environmentalism in school and daycare. I remember when my daughter tearfully told me that “all the polar bears will be dead because of global warming”. She was in kindergarten and her favorite part of zoo visits was watching the polar bears. Yes, she was a child and they are prone to literalism. Sadly, so are many sane adults.

The recent Gulf Oil spill was described by President Barack Obama as “the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced”.  Yet, a few months later there is little physical evidence of such dire consequences. The media breathlessly waited for the opportunity to film oil-covered animals and fouled beaches. It turns out that more real damage may be caused by the president’s knee-jerk offshore oil drilling ban than the actual oil spill.

Common threads of environmental extremism are the gross exaggeration of potential impacts and a “doomsday is nigh upon us” call to immediate action. I suppose this helps their never-ending fundraising appeals rake in the really big bucks.

James Jay Lee bought into the doomsday environmental ideology. His concerns were certainly radical, but they are not unique to him. There is evidence Lee was led to his warped conclusions. It is a relatively short trip from “humans are killing the planet” to “humans must die to save the planet”.

In fact, A&E Network’s The History Channel aired a series entitled “Life After Humans“. One of the show’s premises was that the planet would quickly return to a better state if people weren’t present. Perhaps, Mr. Lee felt that Discovery had dropped the ball vis a vis the History Channel.

Indeed, the purveyors of environmental extremism reap riches through the sale of their delusional books and videos. Have you seen the pictures of Al Gore’s new multi-million dollar oceanside mansion?

But, that story will go unreported by liberal media outlets. There will be no investigative reports. There will be no exposes on dangerous and violent radical environmentalism. There will be no recriminations by “mainstream” liberal groups.

That wouldn’t push the liberal/progressive/enviromentalist agenda forward.
