Lindsey Graham Surrenders Again… and a Shakira Video!

One of life’s biggest conundrums is how Republican US Senators Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham can be from the same state.  OK, maybe not the biggest conundrum, but definitely one of the Top Ten.

South Carolina is one of the most conservative of the Blue State Bible Belt.  In line with that tradition, DeMint is one of the most outspoken conservative members of the chamber.  And, Lindsey Graham is… well… he just isn’t.  In fact, he’s not in the same politcal solar system.

Mr. Graham likes to claim he is a true-blue conservative.  However, when the chips are down, conservatives really can’t count on his vote.  For example, at today’s Senate Judiciary Committee meeting, Senator Graham voted “Yes” on the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court.

Yes, it was a committee vote, and he could still vote “No” on the floor.  But, that isn’t very likely considering this quote from Fox News:

What’s in Elena Kagan’s heart is that of a good person who adopts a philosophy I disagree with,” Graham said. “She will serve this nation honorably, and it would not have been someone I would have chosen, but the person who did choose, President Obama, I think chose wisely.

Kagan has a good heart and that qualifies her to interpret the United States Constitution?  Sheesh, my grandmother has a good heart and she’d be the first to tell you she isn’t fit to wear a black robe.  Granny would be shocked to discover that she has the same level of judicial experience as a Supreme Court nominee –-  NONE AT ALL!

Ms. Kagan has never spent a day on the bench.  Not at the federal level.  Not at the state level.  Not even in small claims court!  This is a post with lifetime tenure to decide important issues of constituional law.  The want ad for this position should have clearly stated: “Serious applicants only need apply.”

Heck, Judge Judy is vastly more qualified than Elena Kagan.  I’m open to her nomination on that issue alone — and I don’t know Judge Judy’s politics.  Yet, Senator Graham bloviates that President Obama has chosen wisely.  It’s enough to make Linda Blair’s head spin full-circle.

Kagan spent the entire hearing process dancing more than Shakira in a music video.  And, somewhere among the hip shakes and pelvic thrusts, Senator Graham found nuggets of knowledge which led him to predict that Kagan will serve honorably.

Based upon what evidence, Senator Graham?  As a lawyer, shouldn’t you base your conclusion on facts?  Well, persuade us.  Lay out the facts for those of us who didn’t graduate law school.  We’d love to know what you know.  If only to determine what passes for a finely trained legal mind in Washington, DC.

I feel like calling the state offices in Columbia, SC and asking if Senator Graham really has a license to practice law.  With his vote today, he has cast great suspicion on his professional capabilities and judgment.  We have come to expect that from liberals.  But, it is seriously disturbing from a self-described conservative.  Then again, Senator Graham has a history of surrender on conservative principles.

I may also ask that person on the telephone: “Don’t you have any more Jim DeMints in South Carolina?”
