Arizona Dems: You’re Wrong Mr. President
In his July 1st speech on immigration, President Obama stated that the US border is more secure today than it was twenty years ago.
He must have meant the Alaska/Yukon Territory border. Although the polar bears still move freely back and forth at will.
Republicans weren’t the only ones to scoff at Mr. Obama’s rhetorical pas de deux. Three Arizona Democrat members of the US House of Representatives also found truth to be the first casualty of Obamaspeak.
Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) opined:
The crisis on America’s borders won’t be addressed with words. I was disappointed to hear the president give short shrift to border security concerns…
Representative Ann Kirkpatrick (D-AZ) retorted:
As any politician knows, it is easier to make speeches than it is to make progress, and we need more than talk from the white House and Congress right now.
These would be tame criticisms from a Republican member of Congress. But, from Border State Democrats – these qualify as fightin’ words.
The strongest words (well, for a Democrat) came from Representative Harry Mitchell (D-AZ):
The federal government has a responsibility to secure the border and fix our broken immigration system, but hasn’t done so, and Arizona continues to shoulder the burden.
Translation: How can it be safer today, when you guys have done absolutely nothing? Now the state government has to do your job!
But, before you take too much solace from these criticisms consider this: all three are first- or second-termers from districts carried by Bush and McCain. And, the recently adopted SB1070 is extremely popular throughout the state. The White House may give them a “pass” for their political heresy.
